Supervision in Forensic Psychology

Forensic psychology is an arena that stresses boundaries, deadlines, and professionalism. The audience for reports is often not the individual who is being assessed as is found in therapeutic evaluations.  The focus of helping people learn to advocate for themselves, to reduce recidivism, and to navigate working with mandated clients is often a challenge for new trainees who come from community mental health training or programs that emphasize advocacy.  This session will aim to provide participants with a discussion of the difference between forensic and traditional therapeutic orientations and how this should be addressed in supervision.

Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify pitfalls when addressing supervision in forensic fields.

  • Participants will be able to list at least three differences between therapeutic and forensic lenses/orientations.
